Tatiana Blass – Stage Crew

Highlights include a significant body of previously unseen works, created specifically for Instituto Tomie Ohtake, alongside pieces from different periods of the artist’s career. The new paintings from the series Contraluz [Backlight], made on glass, incorporate architecture, the play of light, and the visitor’s own movement into the image itself, while works from the series Metade da fala no chão [Half the Speech on the Floor], Quebra-quebra [Breakage], Nó [Knot], Noite-dia [Night-Day], and Contrarregra reveal how the artist brings painting, sculpture, sound, and word into dialogue with one another.

The transformation of matter is central to the show. In several works, materials such as wax, glass, bronze, and ceramics remain in constant flux, incorporating time as part of the piece itself. Rather than presenting fixed forms, Tatiana Blass creates pieces that change in response to light, heat, gravity, or the presence of visitors, making transformation part of the viewing experience.

Developed together with the artist, the exhibition design turns the galleries into a theatrical space. It incorporates two stages, which become part of the visitor’s route and interact directly with the surrounding works. More than set pieces, these devices underscore the idea of backstage that runs throughout Stage Crew.

The show also features never-before-seen works born from Tatiana Blass’s encounter with musician Kiko Dinucci. Drawing on the artist’s recent paintings, the two began a creative exchange that led to the cover of the composer’s new album and, later, to a series of pieces developed specifically for the project.
