Tarik Kiswanson – Threshold

Tarik Kiswanson’s first Solo Exhibition in São Paulo,Threshold was originally conceived for the Glass Room at MAM São Paulo and later adapted to occupy an entire gallery at Instituto Tomie Ohtake, creating an architectural intervention that alters the perception of space.

In this installation, the artist brings together three suspended elements: a chair from the Móveis Cimo factory, once used in Brazilian immigration offices in the 1950s; a 19th-century Belgian Catholic church pew, a testimony to the colonial circulation of sacred objects; and Cradle, a white cocoon-shaped sculpture that evokes origin, absence, and the potential of the future. Brought together in the exhibition space, these elements create a sensitive environment that invites reflection on identity, exile, and belonging.

More than representing historical narratives, Threshold offers an immersive and poetic experience in which the visible and the invisible intertwine.

The Ministry of Culture, the Municipal Department of Culture and Creative Economy of the City of São Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, and Instituto Tomie Ohtake present this exhibition, as part of the program MAM São Paulo meets Instituto Tomie Ohtake. This show is also part of the France in Brazil Season 2025, a cultural exchange initiative promoted by the Institut Français and the Guimarães Rosa Institute (Itamaraty).
